sell your woBit O’Money: Who’s Behind the Bitcoin Bubble?

Guy Behind Why Tumblr Sucks and IsTumblrDown.com Is Plotting a Tumblr-KillerAnd a China Incubator Wants to Fund Him

sell your woBit O’Money: Who’s Behind the Bitcoin Bubble?,A new virtual currency has computer nerds playing bankers. But is Bitcoin really an unbreakable bubble? And how do we get some?

Satoshi Nakamoto is the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin. (Rasmus Rasmussen, Z1Xwitch ArtWork)

Comic by Rasmus Rasmussen,Z1Xwitch ArtWork)

It was a tweet from a stranger that crystallized the concept of Bitcoin for Bruce Wagner. &8220;I can explain the benefit of Bitcoin in four words,&8221; one of Mr. Wagners 12,000-some Twitter followers wrote. Briefcases full of cash.

At the time, briefcases full of pennies seemed more aptone unit of the new virtual currency was then worth $0.06. Then, in one day Cheap Juicy Couture Handbags, the price of a Bitcoin jumped to $0.22. Mr. Wagner, a former I.T. specialist who now produces and stars in his own web TV shows, became obsessed with the things. He sat at his computer, too excited to eat, reading the myriad white s, trade blogs, technical analyses and forum discussions about Bitcoin. For five days, he hardly slept. He just kept thinking, This is amazing. This is going to change everything.

The last time hed been this excited was when Windows came out. He got his hands on some Bitcoins and sold when the price doubled. It kept climbing. He invested more.

Bitcoin is Internet gold, a digital currency developed by a community of programmers in 2009 that represents the first plausible manifestation of an unregulated global cryptocurrency first imagined by anarchist computer hackers in the late 90s. Bitcoins are snippets of code that use encryption to prevent counterfeiting and double-spending. Complex algorithms control the money supply, in theory replacing the need for banks or a central regulator. Right now Bitcoins can be generatedor &8220;mined&8221;by running a program on a powerful computer. This task requires exponentially more time and processing power as the number of Bitcoins grows, and the absolute number of Bitcoins is capped at 21 million, mimicking the scarcity of gold. There are now 6,539,450 in circulation; $2 million worth were traded on the main Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox on Friday.

The price of a Bitcoin climbed slowly but steadily until May, when Gawker and the tech blog Launch published two big stories about the phenomenon. Prices started zigzagging up, hitting a high of $33.11 last week after three weeks of increasingly frenzied trading, and then fell a spectacular 30 percent Friday morning, what the blogs dubbed &8220;Digital Black Friday.&8221; As of now3 p.m. Tuesdaya Bitcoin can be had for around $18.

As with gold, the number of things one can purchase with Bitcoin is limited. There are 64 listings onBitGigs.com, a recently launched job board for buyers and sellers who want to do business in Bitcoins, and a few dozen more onBitcoinclassifieds.net. Some programmers in New York created an app for Android phones that allows users to trade Bitcoins on the spot. A few start-ups have listed on the Global Bitcoin Stock Exchange uggs on sale, an experimental market for bonds and private companies. There are websites that allow you to purchase ground coffee or alpaca socks with Bitcoin. Meze Grill on 55th Street and Eighth Avenue, &8220;where authentic Mediterranean food meets modern flavor,&8221; accepts Bitcoin, as does the Fetish Fortress, a bondage dungeon in Chinatown.

Bitcoin appeals primarily to computer geeks, who love it for its technical elegance. It has also found ns among libertarians and populists, because it circumvents banks and governing authorities; digital natives, because it simplifies peer-to-peer payments; and law-breakers of various kinds,Long Sleeve Polo Shirts. because transactions are untaxed and difficult to trace.

Most of the activity around Bitcoin right now is pure speculation, however, due to the violent price fluctuations and limited adoption by merchants. The Wall Street Journals SmartMoney blog trumpeted &8220;The Currency Thats Up 200,000%.&8221; One German coder who frequents Bitcoin forums claims investors gave him $500,000 to build a data center to mine Bitcoins; a programmer posting onReddit emptied his bank account and maxed out his credit cards in March to buy $10,000 worth of mining equipment. (Within three months of finding Bitcoins, he wrote, it has completely consumed my entire life, all of my money, and I am loving every minute of it.&8221;) One college student sustained permanent minor brain damage due to heatstroke after he dozed off in his room next to four computers furiously mining Bitcoins. &8220;I wish I was joking,&8221; he said in a forum post that was reposted on the websiteBitcoinMiningAccidents.com. Rick Falkvinge, founder of the Swedish Pirate Party, declared he wasputting all his savings into Bitcoin.

According to Larry White, an economics professor at George Mason University who specializes in monetary theory and banking, Bitcoin is essentially &8220;a floating exchange rate against other currencies.&8221; He added with some amusement, &8220;It does seem to have some purchasing power, or at least some expectation of having some purchasing power, and so it seems to have lifted itself by its own bootstraps into having a positive value.&8221;

Bitcoin enthusiasts believe the currency will rival the dollar, so the ct that the ultimate supply is fixed makes it a sure bet.

Dr. White isnt so sure. The currency simply doesnt offer enough advantages over traditional currencies to compel the average person to switch. &8220;Im having trouble figuring out the practical business case for it going mainstream,&8221; he said, &8220;unless the U.S. dollar becomes much more unstable.&8221;

Sounds plausible to us!

Under that scenario, if Bitcoin were able to present a more stable alternative WOW Gold, the cryptocurrency would be &8220;healthy competition for the dollar,&8221; Dr. White said 5 finger shoes,five toe shoes. adding, &8220;This is, by the way, the same thing I said about the Liberty Dollar.&8221;

The Liberty Dollar was a private currency minted in Idaho and used by at most a quarter million people between 2007 and 2009 FFXIV GIL, during which time its value doubled in relation to silver. It came to an ignominious end when the federal government arrested its creator, among others, and declared the operation a federal crime. E-gold, a digital currency backed by real gold, met a similar te when the U.S. Department of Justice charged its creators with money-laundering.

As for Bitcoin, Senator Chuck Schumer beganagitating for a crackdown on the currency after it was used to buy various illegal drugs on the underground website Silk Road. A Bitcoin ban would be tough to enforce for the same reasons music piracy has been impossible to stamp out. But the government has enough tools at its disposal to prevent Bitcoin from becoming mainstream, Dr. White says.

There are also concerns about the currency&8217;s technical integrity due to a story spreading about one Bitcoin investorwho says he lost almost half a million dollars&8217; worth of Bitcoins to a hacker.

Mr. Wagner.

Like most nifty ideas that germinate in the tech world, the odds are against Bitcoin ever achieving widespread use. Nevertheless, there are plenty of believers. &8220;Its only going to take one rich Arab sheik to throw some pocket change at it,&8221; opined Mr. Wagner, who has become an unofficial Bitcoin spokesman after creating a Bitcoin-for-dummies website,Bitcoinme.com. He also hosts The Bitcoin Show, a web TV series on his network; organizes the monthly New York Bitcoin Users Meetup, which has 62 members; and is planning BitCon 2011, the first Bitcoin conference &8220;and world expo,&8221; which will take place in New York in August.

He doesnt give investment advice, hes careful to say. But hes bullish.

&8220;Its a bubble, but its an unbreakable bubble, one that is just going to keep growing and growing and growing,&8221; he said. He had predicted Bitcoins would be going for $10 each by the end of May; the price hit $9.999 on June 1. He now says it will hit $100 by the end of the month and $10,000 within one year. That nutty-sounding forecasting recalls dot-com bubble boy analyst Henry Blosell your wow golddgets mous 1998 prediction that Amazons pre-split stock would double to $400, which happened less than a month later. (The call earned him a job at Merrill Lynch, but his public cheerleading of tech stocks eventually led to a $2 million fine for securities fraud.)

&8220;Its kind of like the early days of the dot-com,&8221; Mr. Wagner said. &8220;People heard about this thing called the Internet and they didnt know what it was,Taobao Agent. didnt know what to do, so they bought every [stock] that ended in a dot-com and of course they all lost their shirts. This is kind of like this, but you actually can buy a piece of it, like the Internet but you can own a piece of it.&8221;

We asked him how many Bitcoins he owned.

&8220;Thats like asking me my bank balance,&8221; Mr. Wagner replied. &8220;People have to realize that Bitcoin is money and in America its not polite to ask people how much money they have.&8221;

By this point in our reporting, The Observer wanted in. &8220;Can I have one of your Bitcoins?&8221; we pinged a hacker friend we knew had accumulated a nice pile, worth almost two grand at todays prices. &8220;Hell no. You should have asked me two weeks ago. I was giving them out,&8221; he typed back from a start-up office in San Francisco. &8220;Current plan is to hold out until they are $100 a coin, then sell 20 percent. After that Ill wait till it hits $1,000 a coin and sell another 70 percent.&8221;

&8220;I could have been doing this many years ago, and I would have had a billion dollars!&8221; Alex Spitzer, a Boston-based programmer told us with wry regret. He read about Bitcoin in 2009, but didnt get into mining until recently.

Even so, Mr. Spitzer is mindful of the groupthink that pervades his industry. &8220;The problem with the Internet is that its too easy to find people like youlike-minded, high-minded kind of nonsense. The more you read these sites and these forums, the more people will tell you that Bitcoin is, like, the best thing ever.&8221;

In ct, hardcore Bitcoin enthusiasts believe the currency could change the world for the better. In some parts of the world, its impossible for small businesses to take electronic payments, said Jered Kenna, one of the founders ofTradeHill, which launched last week as the first competitor to Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox. With Bitcoin, businesses can start taking online orders immediately, no bank account, no credit cards, no transaction fees required. Micropayments also become practical, he told The Observer from the office in Chile where he and his co-founder, Adam Stradling, a New York expat, had been working nonstop through the weekend to keep the site up despite massive trade volumes in the wake of Digital Black Friday.

&8220;I grew up a computer nerd and I looked at it from a technical aspect and I said, wow, this could actually work, but the general population just wont see it,&8221; Mr. Kenna said. &8220;I underestimated people. Then I saw it growing. I said, you know, I could help this, and I could make a lot of money at the same time.&8221;

But Bitcoin is an experiment, he said. &8220;Dont bet the house.&8221;

Interesting post. It is important to remember that bitcoins are speculative. They could explode in value, or they could fizzle out if the currency is compromised.

No matter the outcome, bitcoins have redefined what a currency is. A standard has been set for future currencies.

Interesting post. It is important to remember that bitcoins are speculative. They could explode in value, or they could fizzle out if the currency is compromised.

No matter the outcome, bitcoins have redefined what a currency is. A standard has been set for future currencies.

&8220;But the government has enough tools at its disposal to prevent Bitcoin from becoming mainstream, Dr. White says.&8221;

I would love to know how a government (Bitcoin is after all a global phenomena) would be able to do.

build a datacenter add nodes until +60% compute power (only need more than 50, however at 60 they would have time to always stay at +50), pollute the network with rubbish data, thus stuffing it, thus people no longer trust it,Polo shirts for men. thus people no longer use it &8211; bitcoin dies&8230;

however as with most things that are snuffed out, a new version/idea comes along that sorts out this 50% compute power issue and we start again

No, this isn&8217;t feasible: the computational power of the network r exceeds the combined power of the top supercomputers.

who said you need supercomputers?? the gov prints money these days, filling a multi level buildings with a ton of 6970&8242;s is totally doable, all you need is money, gov prints money, 1+1=2

What would sort out the 50% CPU power issue?

Would having multiple networks (like namecoin) which exchanges between them make it better?

True, at the moment this is still somewhat of a threat.

However they will need to control that 50% for some time since the system does take previous proofs of work into account. If they attempted the single data center approach, the bitcoiners could launch a counter attack. Remember it is used by the some of the same people who stole all that Sony data.

i think if the gov were serious they&8217;d probably go for more than one building&8230; I mean if I was told by the boss &8220;oi go take down bitcoin so bitcoin is trashed, i know something else will spring up, however in the mean time it will create a good enough disruption in what they are doing. get it done!&8221; my reply would be &8220;what&8217;s the budget?&8221; and his reply is &8220;get it done&8221;

I&8217;d be employing like 30 people and finding space in multiple cities and filling up buildings&8230; no way the bitcoin community could counter that approach&8230;

No system is 100% secure save for the system that is 100% unusable. The goal of systems security is not to make a system unexploitable, but to make exploitation impractical.

Wrong Nicholas, they can&8217;t buy a ton of 6970&8242;s.  Bitcoin miners own &8216;em all &8211; and we ain&8217;t sellin&8217;

lol, its another E-Gold. It will get shut down by the US Government for acting as a &8220;Financial Institution&8221; without a license, just like E-Gold did. And anyone with any money in it, will not be able to get it back (like E-Gold.)

selling wowThe Lawbringer: Account management and you

, your weekly dose of WoW

Writing The Lawbringer has taught me a lesson in trends. Over the past few months, specific questions are sent to me in topical batches. Sometimes it is a few emails about selling accounts. Other times, I get four to five emails about account security or compromise. Mays email topic of choice was transferring accounts to mily members.

selling wowThe Lawbringer: Account management and you,Blizzard is very restrictive about what you can and cannot change regarding your account information. On the one hand, it is your account, right? Shouldnt you have ultimate control over the information you provide for the cilitation of a service you pay for? On the other hand, there is a certain degree of problem mitigation that comes with restrictive change. If Blizzard can control certain aspects of what you do with your account and the information it is all filed under white polo shirts, problems can get mitigated before they appear. Todays topic is really all about damage mitigation.

As we usually have to do, we must get the first point of ct out of the way. Your account isnt really your account. You dont own the account, but you do possess the rights to access the games that youve purchased associated with your account. The World of Warcraft characters bound to your account are owned by Blizzard, and that is pretty well-worn territory at this point in the discussion. You dont have the rights to sell your character or your account because, for what its worth, you dont really own anything attached to it.

Heres one of the emails that I received that sums up todays issue irly well:

Hi Mat,

After your answer about selling accounts here is my issue. I have an account for my teenage son that he plays on. When he turn 18 is there anyway to legally transfer ownership of this account to him? I would like to remove my credit card information and let him start paying for his own WoW. Is there any way to do this without him starting over on a new account?

Signed,

Dad who plays WoW too.

The short answer to any account transfer question is polo ralph lauren, sadly, no, except for kids. There are a few pieces of information that Blizzard wants to lock in as, well, account-bound. By keeping tight control over the name on the account, for instance, Blizzard can stop a good amount of account selling and Terms of Service-breaking account transfers. Children reaching maturity, however, is a different story.

But why? Most of it has to do with damage mitigation. WoW is already the target of a huge amount of fraud and hacking, which fuels a gray market that revels in account and gold sales. Selling accounts is harmless until someone gets robbed or defrauded out of their money and runs to Blizzard for recompense. By mandating that you cannot transfer accounts or even change the owners name on the account, Blizzard draws the line at selling or transferring accounts — the only person who has access to the account is the person whose name is on it. With one name and no changes available or allowable, there is no dispute over who is allowed access.

The system is set up in such a way that even account transfers between mily members is specifically prohibited. One would think that this type of transfer would or should be fine, considering there is little to no chance of fraud. Well, the whole point of a hard-and-st rule is that the line is clear. We call those bright line rules. Even if something seems fine or logical on one side of the line, it still exists on the wrong side of the line.

Lets selling wow accountstalk hypotheticals. One of the more common fraud situations I describe is someone selling an account and then calling up Blizzard to get it restored to the original owner even after its been sold. Its scary because ignorant or buyers have no idea what they are getting into when they fork over money to a seller. On the other side of the coin, if your account was ever stolen or compromised, youre pretty much the only one who can make changes to it or control its future.

There are ways around transferring your account as the only way to get your son to pay for the game. In ct, there are a few good ones that you might want to consider. First,runescape gold. at least from the email, it seems like the only issue would be the payment on the account and not the name on it. You wouldnt be able to transfer the account to your son, but if he knows the password and the account information, you could pull off your credit card information and let him add game cards to continue playing. The issue remains — you are still technically against the terms of use, unless the wording of the Terms of Use allows your son to play with your permission.

Of all of the things Blizzard is looking for with account sharing, however, this is probably not high on the list. If your IP keeps changing and the location that the account is accessed from jumps around from place to place, the account will be closed until reactivated. If your son is staying still, you will probably never have an issue. The only real problem is if your son needs access to Blizzard for an account issue. You would need to manage the account, as it is still connected to your name.

Heres Blizzards ownFAQ statement on why it is so restrictive with the name on the account and transfers:

Why is it set up that way?

Blizzard takes the integrity of its game and the matter of account ownership very seriously. For this reason, the sale of characters and accounts is expressly against the World of Warcraft Terms of Use, and the transfer of characters from one account owner to another is prohibited.

One of the big exceptions to the ban on account sharing is parents and their child. Blizzard sends out lse-positives for hacking when you log into your account from new IP addresses, which is one reason why you get those account compromise emails when using an SSH tunneling service like Smooth Ping. Since youre logging in from a new IP, the game detects the changes and throws up its hands in alarm.

Blizzards Terms of Serviceallows for a parent or guardian to authorize access to one child. Looks like little Donna doesnt get to play WoW when big brother Jimmy has access to the account! (Dont feel bad for Donna. She stands in fire, keyboard turns, clicks action bars,buy cheap wow gold. and wont stop talking on Mumble. Shes terrible at WoW for a 5-year-old.)

Our Terms of Use prohibits the sharing of accounts except in the situation where a parent or guardian authorizes access to one child.

Kids are obviously not going to have the credit card available, in their name at least, to pay for World of Warcrafts subscription fee. Parents must create a kids account and supervise play for the most part, and the account stays in the parents name. When the child hits 18 and legal, adult maturity, he or she could create their own WoW and/or Battle.net account and would have to purchase new licenses for the games as well as create new characters from scratch.

Heres the big exception: once a child reaches the age of maturity, a parent can fill out a specific form and relinquish rights to the account over to the child. You can find the form on theBlizzard support page here. Blizzard knows that children are going to play the game with their parents permission and, upon reaching the age of maturity, will want to keep that account on their own terms. This is one of those exceptions that does take a good bit of identification and potentially time, but it is available to you.

It is interesting that WoW has a system in place like this,Buy WOW Gold. especially since the game has gone on for long enough that children have passed into legal maturity over the course of WoWs lifetime. Many MMOs might never have this issue because of the very nature of their lifespan. World of Warcraft has parents and children growing together in and out of Azeroth, creating an interesting environment.

Anemail form also exists for a correction to your legal name on an already-registered account or a change to the parental control email update information. There is no email form for transferring an account to a new person, however. If you just got married and changed your last name or went through a divorce and got your last name back, Blizzard allows only the last name on an account to be changed due to very specific circumstances. The process is a bit intensive, but nothing too ridiculous.

There are even scams out there that tell you to don a female voice or get a friend to call Blizzard and have them change your last name to your new, ke last name by way of ke marriage in order to transfer account ownership. Do not do this. These people work hard enough as it is dealing with addons they dont support and all of those calls from ninja looting victims. Give them a break.

When youre a company like Blizzard that has to mitigate calls, problems, and potential account disputes, removing one of the crucial aspects of account management from the player goes a long way toward stopping problems before they happen. My account is a sacred thing that gets licenses, purchases Cheap Juicy Couture Handbag, and value added to it over time. While I dont own my account, I do have an investment in it. Anything that keeps it in my possession is a pretty good move to me,Vibram five fingers. since I spent a huge amount of time cultivating my experiences and achievements in these games.

Blizzard made the call to be restrictive with your name in order to protect account integrity. It may seem like a giant pain in the butt, but its not done to make your life miserable. Youll be pretty damn happy that your name is on that account when someone else tries to take it away from you, especially with so much money in expansions and your own time invested into it. With your kids, however, you are safe in knowing that their account under your name can eventually be their account.

Hmm. Do they have any provision for people who legally change their first names? I did so a couple of years ago, before I got my WoW account five toe shoes, but it would have been miserable if the timing had been different, and Id been stuck with my old (incorrectly gendered) name on my Real Id….

Yes, it is quite common for people to need to change their name due to a legal name change. Here is a thread where a Blizzard Support Agent links to the proper form:

@Riverstrom Thats only for last name change, not first name, since the OP of the thread you linked to was asking about getting married.

With respect, its not just for last name changes. Its the Legal Name Correction form, for whatever legal name changes youve done. There isnt a separate form for changing last name vs your entire name.

Blizzards process for name changes on accounts is pretty much the same as the other many hoops you have to jump through. This is what is requested on the webform:

Please provide a scanned image of the government issued documentation of the name change, or of two forms of government issued photo ID showing your name before and after the change.

You can definitely transfer characters between accounts and even between bnet accounts. I have even done this when rafing. The names on the account have to match.

Citation!

The Character Transfer feature allows you to move characters to other realms as well as between accounts where you are the registered user.

My spouse just got her account, and I transfered her character from my account over to hers because we have the same last name.

My son pays for his account with his Debit card without problems. The account was created with my information years ago before he was 18. Now he is almost 20. Though he has had a debit card in his name since he was 16.

The only problem he has had is the IP issue. He spends time at both his mothers and my homes. This was enough to trigger a check by Blizzard but that was easy enough to clear up and we dont have that issue anymore.

Hm, part of me is skeptical of your answer, but the situation I know of is not exactly parallel. Blizz does understand about kids growing up, the situation I know of was a child whod shared the account with their parent, then turned 18 and wanted their own account.

They did have to purchase the new licenses, of course, but Blizz was quite willing to transfer the childs character to the new account once it was set up. In the case you are citing, the parent apparently does not play, and that is a different situation. Common sense would dictate they would change the account information to the actual player once the player comes of legal age, but common sense isnt, so I can see your response as well.

Blizzard need to work on a way for parents to create accounts to transfer childrens alts to once that child shows a desire to play more often.

In my case I have 2 daughters that play on my account from time to time. But I can see in the future that they would want their own account and I would like to be able to transfer their alts to their account.

As it stands, they will loose out on the work they have done if they decided to become a separate paying customer. Blizzard needs to find a way to not punish children who want to become separate paying customers.

From maclean37 just above:

Blizz does understand about kids growing up, the situation I know of was a child whod shared the account with their parent, then turned 18 and wanted their own account.

They did have to purchase the new licenses, of course, but Blizz was quite willing to transfer the childs character to the new account once it was set up.

It sounds like they will let you do that.

Hmmm, I disagree. I asked the CS forum this exact question about a year ago because my stepson was approaching 18 and per the rules I had to create the account in my name a number of years ago when he was 14. I put his WoW account into his own bnet account too when it was time to do that. Per the blue response the name is changeable in this circumstance but you need to jump through hoops and provide documentation to Blizzard that should be possible if the request is legitimate.

Blizzard has no rule that the person paying for the account has to be the same person that owns the account. I have been paying for my girlfriends account for years, with my credit card. Just change the payment info so sonny pays with his credit card.

This,5 finger shoes. Blizzard couldnt care less anyway..

Ive been account-sharing with my sisters for 3 years, and its been great.

On an aside, the writer shouldnt listen to Matt, sure youre not supposed to let your son take over ownership for your account, but just unsubscribe and let him re-subscribe with his card.

Where did I say he shouldnt? I said he should let him pay with game cards or whatever if the kid didnt have a credit/debit card yet. It is WORTH noting, however, that even rules Blizzard doesnt care about are still there.

wow gold buyDeal-a-meal

Talk about gangbusters.

In January 2010, Washington D.C.-based LivingSocial had 33 employees and 120,000 members inside six markets. By last month, those numbers had grown to 1,400 employees and 28 million members across 250 markets internationally.

wow gold buyDeal-a-meal,In an average day, the company adds six employees and an entire new market — say, a New York City borough, or an entire metropolitan area. Each week, it welcomes roughly 1.5 million new members. According to communications director Maire Griffin, LivingSocial is on track to book $1 billion in gross revenue in 2011.

And if you think thats big, meet Groupon. The Chicago-based leader in collective buying launched in November 2008, and with a force of around 1,800 employees, currently operates in more than 500 markets that span 46 countries; as of March, it counted more than 70 million subscribers.

When Groupon filed work earlier this month for an initial public offering, it showed sales in 2011s first quarter nearing $650 million. Though some analysts are crying bull, the IPO itself may be worth $15 billion to $25 billion.

All this makes it abundantly clear that collective buying is good for these companies, and popular with consumers. So one might extrapolate that the model must also be good for one of its top merchant bases: restaurants.

But thats where the statistics turn tricky, the evidence grows relative and subjective, and where business analysts, restaurateurs, journalists and public commenters have filled the datasphere with passionate debate.

Thats also where this story, limited for digestibility to Groupon and LivingSocial and eateries (versus the oft-featured spas, photography studios and other merchants), seeks to find answers in our local market and beyond. Because really, how probable does it sound that a business with food costs beyond labor and overhead can turn a profit, or at least break even Long Sleeve Polo Shirts, when typically receiving 25 cents on the dollar with these collective coupons?

But if the model werent working, why would any restaurant sign up? And how would these companies be exploding?

Its a real pickle, no question.

Grouponomics

If youre entirely new to collective buying sites (What? You arent onmmjdailydeals.com yet?!), the gist is that you sign up for a free daily deal to be e-mailed to you. For example: Youre invited to pay $5 for a coupon worth $10 of goods at CiCis Pizza, which 1,050 area subscribers did on May 27 — a local LivingSocial restaurant record. In LivingSocials case, you can also subscribe to travel escapes, mily deals and adventures, with a home and garden option coming soon.

Anyone can sign up for daily deals in any market, which many regular business travelers apparently do. Griffin likes to share the story of a couple who supposedly drove from San Francisco to Washington cheapest wow gold, D.C., and planned their route according to LivingSocial deals along the way. (Cheap! Or, um … clever.)

Neither company will comment on its exact number of current subscribers in the Colorado Springs market, but in late May, a LivingSocial rep told a Springs merchant it had 86,000; it had launched in September. Groupon consumer PR rep Kelsey ONeill would say that as of January, Groupon had claimed 130,000; it had launched here eight months earlier. With El Paso Countys adult population at around 456,500, that could mean at least one in four people locally are savvy to collective buying.

On the merchants end, they usually split the take 50/50 with Groupon or LivingSocial; so in the above example, CiCis would get $2.50 after dishing $10 of pizza. To cover the $7.50 loss, it needs guests to spend much more than the coupon amount (referred to as overspending), or to become a steady customer who gradually pays the business back and helps it profit through repeat patronage, which is the whole idea. (It should also be noted that many coupon-holders forget to redeem them, which obviously benefits restaurants.)

Theres generally perceived to be a decent amount of risk involved, which well unpack later, but many merchants are attracted to the ct that they put no money down to do these deals, and instead receive money from Groupon and LivingSocial up front. Groupon sends one payment the day after the deal closes, another in 30 days, and a final payment after 60 days. LivingSocial pays in two installments, one within two weeks of the sale and another a few weeks after that.

A May 4 Reuters article titled Grouponomics explains the appeal this way: No longer do merchants pay money for the privilege of giving coupons away for free in local newss. Instead, they receive money — half of the total paid up front. Theres something extremely gratifying about being paid to offer discounts to new customers.

And a few thousand dollars, during the slow winter months, can be a blessing for some businesses. Sometimes, it even means the difference between open or closed doors.

The believers

Lanna Hillstrom WOW Gold, owner of the 2½-year-old Curry Leaf, insists Groupon ewow gold buyingssentially saved her business. Despite offering locally unique and outstanding Sri Lankan food, she endured a rather lean winter, often not knowing if she could hang on.

Then April brought 755 Groupon sales, $5 for $10 at lunch or $7 for $15 at dinner, and an immediate rush of business. Around 80 percent of the 200 or so whove thus r redeemed (the coupon doesnt expire until Oct. 2) have overspent by around $10, and many who saw the deal didnt buy, but then came in anyway.

Its totally worth it, she says. Ive got new customers coming in the door like you wouldnt believe, and now theyre hooked. Ive got people calling in lunch orders at 10:30. I can barely get my food prepared on time.

Opb&j co-owner James Killebrew also feels good about his April LivingSocial sale of 668 vouchers at $8 for $16 in food. He wasnt a n, though, of his August 2010 Groupon experience.

Even though he sold 693 spend-$4-to-get-$8 deals (10 percent of which were never redeemed), Groupon attracted too many coupon people, he felt.

The majority of the Groupon people spent just up to $8, he says. Theyd hold up items and say, How much does this cost? How much does that come to? They didnt tip. They were real cheap. Our feeling was, Well never see these people again.

By contrast, LivingSocial patrons whove thus r redeemed have generally overspent by around $6 or more. The deal was structured at $16, to be spent in a single visit; Killebrews average sandwich costs $6, so users, many of whom had never visited Opb&j before, have brought friends and mily in with them.

Most importantly, Killebrew believes hes reached more people through LivingSocial because of its superior use of social media. The company offers a secondary deal where if a user who buys a coupon posts it to his or her Facebook page or tweets it, and three others buy the deal because of that, the initial user gets it free. So naturally, its more likely to go viral in a world of deal-seekers. Now Im reaching people I never would have reached, says Killebrew.

You really need to look at it as an advertising tool, not as, Oh, my restaurant is going to make a bunch of money from selling these. I dont know how much it would otherwise cost me to reach this many people … I dont know where else I could go and find that service.

When, but not if

As illustrated on the right, other area restaurateurs have plenty to say about their own collective-buying experiences. But looking for a more big-picture view, we also sent out a query on a journalist-source database. It read simply, Are collective-buying sites good for restaurants?

The dozen-plus replies we received from business experts of all stripes were encouragingly redundant and enlightening (see somehere), and raised a range of peripheral questions and disclaimers.

We opted to follow up further with Mark Chussil, the Portland, Ore.-based founder and CEO of Advanced Competitive Strategies, who has offered business war games and strategy simulations over the past 35 years to the likes of Fortune 500 companies.

Being a model-and-simulator guy, Chussil made it clear right away that perceptions and anecdotes dont answer the question, and that counting overspending and trying to track repeat business wont yield a truly useful result.

The assumption that at 25 cents on the dollar you lose money may be lse, he says. Think of airlines that sell tickets dirt-cheap. The airplane is going anyway; if it has empty seats, its better off selling at any price above the incremental cost of carrying that one person, considering fuel, the transaction cost and so on. They can say its worth it.

The same may be true at a restaurant: What is the cost they carry when empty or full, considering staff, rent, insurance and all their systems?

His list of equation ctors goes on, and drives at comparing the collective-buying risk with its alternatives: doing nothing at all, or putting money into other advertising, joint marketing or loyalty programs that also yield debatable results.

It wont be the same for every restaurant,Taobao Agent. he says. The cost structures are different, as are the patronage and profit margins. There wont be one answer for every restaurant.

So does it really take a guy with an MBA from Harvard to tell us something so basic and, in some ways, unsatisfying?

Yes, Im afraid so, he says. Its good for some, not for others, and as with many things in life, it depends.

Rather than asking if Groupon and LivingSocial are good ideas for restaurants, he finds it more pertinent to ask when theyre good for restaurants. The latter asks what it depends on. And thats what we can use models for.

Inspired by the discussion,Juicy Couture Outlet. Chussil built a crude and incomplete spreadsheet that he later shared. Among his discoveries: Coupons can help if food costs are low and margins high, and hurt if their users displace regular, full-price-paying customers.

The heathens

Another cost that restaurants should weigh is the potential for setting up negative behavior patterns with current and new clientele.

A March article in Slate, titled The Groupon Paradox: How its coupon business could eventually cripple the merchants that rely on it, contends that: Prices are likely to erode as consumers come to expect deals. They will wait for sales to buy, and merchants will find themselves competing ever more fiercely. Meanwhile, merchants brand power will be eroded as consumers look to Groupon (as they do to Orbitz), rather than to the merchants themselves, for the best deals.

The author goes on to say that eventually Groupon will suffer, too: Its sales force is training thousands and perhaps millions of merchants to use e-mail marketing and coupons polo ralph lauren, and merchants will eventually tire of hand[ing] over such a huge share of the revenues.

Look no further than the Margarita at PineCreek to see this very argument in motion. Chef Eric Viedt says he and owner Pati Burleson get calls from Groupon all the time, and have been tempted. Instead, they decided to test the waters themselves.

In late March, in conjunction with the restaurants 37th anniversary, 1,400 people on the outfits mailing list received an offer that the Margarita also posted on its Facebook page: Buy a $50 gift certificate for only $30. They promptly sold 175 certificates, earning them $5,250 up front.

Now, this could be seen as more of a customer loyalty program, on account of it going out to existing customers, but Viedt says he did take calls from new people whose friends had forwarded them the deal.

When everyones looking for deals all the time, we have to get on board somehow, he says. But we didnt want to cheapen our brand, our quality and what we do here.

That sentiment is echoed across town at Jake & Tellys Greek Taverna, where co-owner Jake Topakas was less than thrilled with his LivingSocial experience. Even though hed negotiated a 60/40 split in his vor, he says guests werent the greatest tippers and tended to spend exactly the $40 deal amount.

Why downplay your product? he asks. Isnt it good enough food service to not only pay full price for, but actually want to, because you know its well worth it? … It might be good for a brand-new restaurant that needs promoting, but if youre established, I say, Stay away from these deals!

But those like Topakas and Viedt may be fighting a losing battle, according to Chussil.

You dont have a lot of choice, he says. If you arent [doing deals], someone else is, and people are already trained.

Whos at ult?

Asked about brand-weakening, both Griffin at LivingSocial and ONeill at Groupon reached to company demographic surveys to defend themselves.

We dont consider ourselves a coupon company at all, says Griffin. We are a local commerce company. For us its not about driving a coupon, its about creating an experience.

(Like, umm … eating?)

Coupon-clippers are not our audience, she argues, citing high college and grad-school rates, and high household-income figures polo ralph lauren, among subscribers. LivingSocials internal surveys also reportedly show encouraging figures; they claim that when subscribers patronize a featured restaurant, 50 percent of them are doing so for the first time; 87 percent generally plan to return; and that they overspend by $33.65 on average. Whats more, 97 percent of business partners are interested in running follow-up deals.

ONeill asserts that 83 percent of its clients overspend, in restaurants by an average of 80 percent — think $18 on a $10 coupon. She adds that about 95 percent of their clients are interested in working together again.

If you go looking, stories from that other 5 percent are out there. Just visit the blog of Portland, Ore.-based Posies Bakery & Café (posiescafe.com) for one from last year that spread through cyberspace like wildfire, in the words of café owner Jessie Burke. Her tale of near self-immolation, titled Groupon in Retrospect, inspired 126 comments in a week, including one from Groupon CEO Andrew Mason trying to right the PR nightmare.

Burke, whos been in business around two years, called her deal the single worst decision I have ever made as a business owner thus r, saying that in addition to some great new customers, she was flooded with terrible Groupon customers. Much scarier, she claimed that she had to draw $8,000 from personal savings to cover payroll at one point, pinning that as the cost of doing business with Groupon.

Both Groupon and LivingSocial assert that theyre careful in setting up and structuring their deals. We wont just run any old deal, says ONeill. We only work with businesses that have a great local reputation. Theres an extensive amount of research that goes into it, and an extreme vetting process.

As for how they know that reputation, LivingSocial is proud of a feet on the street philosophy. Unlike Groupon, whose reps typically commute from Chicago, LivingSocial has reps living in each market.

We know whats hot, exciting and what the trends are for that area, says Griffin. It helps us really work with merchants to figure out what is a deal that will not only entice our members to purchase that deal, but whats going to move that business forward.

Groupons ONeill rightfully places some of that responsibility back on restaurants.

We drive the people to your business. Its up to the business to take advantage of this and say, Im going to wow them with our service. Im going to upsell them and bring them back again and again to spend additional money thats not discounted. So business owners have the opportunity to create long-lasting relationships and a whole new customer base using Groupon, and those that take advantage of it and prepare accordingly have great success and come back to run again and again.

And the survey says …

If you could ever place a number on how many businesses benefit from collective buying versus those who dont, the Groupon Effectiveness Study may hint at it.

Done by a Rice University marketing professor last September, the study involved 150 businesses in 19 U.S. cities, spanned 12 product categories in addition to restaurants, and broke out restaurant data from 48 participants individually. Of those, 42 percent reported unprofitable promotions, again citing a prevalence of deal-seekers.

The larger study found that Groupon promotions were profitable for only 66 percent of respondents. In the end, it concluded, there is evidence from this study that raises some concerns about the sustainability of social promotions as they currently exist. We believe these promotions are structured in such a way that they give too much value to consumers and not enough value to the small businesses [that] run them.

The subject of sustainability has been broached by many writers, not only because these companies are growing so rapidly logo design, but because competitors like Tippr, Buy With Me, GiltCity and Morgans Deals are aggressively looking to crash the party.

And now, the heavy hitters are coming, too.

After its iled purchase of Groupon for $6 billion last ll, Google developed Google Offers. It just launched in Portland and will soon be available in three New York City areas, plus San Francisco and Oakland. AmazonLocal launched in Boise, Idaho,logo polo shirts. the day after Google Offers.

Even more menacingly, Facebook Deals, currently available only in Atlanta, San Diego, Dallas, San Francisco, Austin and six other countries, is poised to mine its 600-million-plus users in a way that had a ReadWriteWeb blog writer in late April speculating that Groupon and LivingSocial are seriously at risk of being roadkill.

Why? Because of existing popular features like check-ins and shared newsfeeds that could be tied into deals, and the ct that Facebook is a data miners wet dream, full of peripheral demographic information that could better customize deals.

That info is gold, says the article, and its going to be the real killer for Facebook Deals. Not just scale, not just the worlds greatest viral marketing platform — but valuable data about each and every customer that can then be used to retarget marketing efforts in the future.

A Facebook representative named Emily White claimed in a May 6 Fast Company article that they are not in direct competition with other deal providers, that Facebook is less interested in deals for deals sake, but more interested in deals that enabled people to do things together.

White outlined how the social nature of Facebook Deals should eliminate many of the deal-seekers, and how users and merchants can intece on Facebook. Of course, the example relates to three friends at dinner, posting photos, tagging the business, and generating feedback for the restaurant in a way that only Facebooks intece allows.

Thats the power of a hungry social network.

Deal over

The irony is that Groupon and LivingSocial are already using Facebook, too, as mentioned above with LivingSocials tell-three-friends deal; Groupon has a Facebook page in each market as well as national pages.

Groupon is supposedly in partnership talks with Foursquare on check-in-based deals, and in addition to partnering with Expedia on travel deals, just launched Groupon Now, a feature showing in-the-moment deals based on your location. (A short introductory video is atgroupon.com/now/about.) Again, the example is a restaurant with open tables at lunch: The restaurateur can launch a quick deal to fill seats; users download an app to their smartphone, which displays deals right around them.

This gets back to the query of when, rather than if, a collective buying site can be good for business, and shows that all the jockeying for position should only lead to more innovation.

But will restaurants re any better, regardless of how novel the approach?

The ct is, theyre going to have to, if any of these collective-buying sites are to survive and thrive. If enough restaurants and merchants swear off these services due to poor results, the sites will de into the obscurity of MySpace.

The encouraging ct for (almost) all parties involved: The people are trained, they want the bargains, and so theres a tremendous and potentially endless demand. Now restaurants just need to negotiate a better split, subscribers need to access their un-cheap sides, and collective-buying sites need to do some cannibalizing to keep their own brands strong.

Its a complex formula for success. But where theres a deal, theres a way.

wow gold buyCheap-Ass Game of the Week: Wizard 101 [PC,Subscribe in a reader

I was one of those guys who had my 4 year old daughter on World of Warcraft with me back when I first started playing. Well, she would sit on my lap and tell me to go pick a flower or go dance with the murlocs or swim for hours on end, but I was the guy. Times have certainly changed. Now she has her own WoW account and loves to PVP more than I could even attempt. Shes also 8 (going on 20) now, which means thanks to heredity, shes probably going to have my lack of attention and hyperactivity Black polo shirts,polo ralph lauren. but it also means shes curious about what else is out there in the digital universe.

Enter the Disney Channel and Wizard101 commercials.

She asked me about playing Wizard 101, which I hadnt played but I had heard other guildies in Warcraft talking about their kids playing. So after doing a bit of research (i.e. Google-fu) I downloaded it and realized she had already downloaded it. See, she has her own computer and is a sneaky kid already. I signed up for a new account (since all accounts are free) and upon launching the game, I noticed she already had a level 6 character. Heres a quick back-story about me and my mily: I work for a large corporation as a Level 4 computer Tech. Needless to say Juicy Couture Outlet, I know my way around circuitry. I have four kids, an 8 year old daughter, a seven year old son and twin noobs. My daughter has my technical skills and my son has my athletics skills. The twins have my drooling skills. My daughter actually reset and changed her mothers XP login when she was 3 years old, and didnt stop there, she also created a new ID for her, named it LOLOL and password protected it. I didnt know kids learned so quickly.

Back to the story, I signed on Wizard101, create a Mage-type character and started playing. I happened to be well versed in the way Collectible Card Games like Magic the Gathering, Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh and games like those play since I used to play those games back in the day. It just so happens Wizard101 uses some of the same game mechanics as these old CCG games: turned-based combat with cards you collect as you go through the game. It actually reminds me of the Pokemon GameBoy Color game which I thoroughly enjoyed. The game progresses as you gain experience from doing quests; you also gain cards which you learn from class trainers and end up building your deck of spells. An odd note here: during combat, no one actually fights and nwow gold buyingo one actually dies if one loses, combat is known as an encounter and you become defeated and start back in the main civic zone.

After playing for 6-10 hours, I had realized everyone had went to bed and I just tinkled away another Saturday playing video games. However I also realized this game was something special. Some games draw you in by tying together story lines or something which grabs the players attention to draw them further into the game – almost enough to make each game special for each individual player. This game has a perfect flow which draws you in- completely immersing you into a brilliant storyline with innovative game play which is actually entertaining and exciting to play. Its a game which makes you want to play it when youre not playing it and makes you put other things aside like food and bio breaks – to play it more.

And best of all, I got to play with my daughter (which granted, consisted of her yelling at me to follow her somewhere) with a game she could understand and tell me how to play.

Every site Id read with reviews on Wizard101 compared it to Harry Potter. Other than the ct these are kids being wizards, theres not much other similarity to the books. Ive decided not to compare Wizard101 to Harry Potter. This is in ct,logo design. a very fun game – much more fun than many of the games Potter has tied his trademark on. It doesnt have the depth many other Massively Multi-player Online games has at first glance, but it doesnt need any. Ill tell you the exact reason why Wizard101 is fun and why everyone young and old should at least try it out once: its . The game is designed for the kids to play. Ive heard more adults crying about the chat problems in the game (if youre under 18 years old, there arent any chat options, you simply cant chat -which if youve been in barrens/trade chat in WoW cheapest wow gold, youll be thankful for) than anything else, but lets focus on the good the game brings to the screen: playability, companionship, creativity and of course: shopping.

The play in this game is 50% quest fulfillment and 50% turn-based combat. The quests are just like any other MMO, go defeat 10 of these enemies and Ill give you some money, a bad green coat and another quest. The combat is what makes the game shine. When your player goes into combat polo ralph lauren, you stand in a circle (think of Duck-Duck-Goose) with 4 spots for you and three friends, and then 4 spots for enemies on the other side. You select a card from your hand (hence the Pokemon/Magic references) and start to battle. Every card has an animation, which is great for kids since they can see the Ice Beetle come to life and sneeze on the enemies. Battle ends when either your avatar or the enemy runs out of health points. Theres also little side games or mini-games to help you refill HP/MP, and even if you get high enough points in the games, the rewards are decent gear and cash. The mini-games seem to be based off of old Atari games, specifically: Dig Dug (here called Digger Doug) one like Joust, and one which looks like Columns from the old Sega Genesis days – but you get the idea. The combat system is based off of cards you collect on your way and is similar to other CCG games where you can have unlimited cards, but only a certain number in your main deck and than you can have a few extra treasure cards as a sideboard. Treasure cards are one use cards you get for turning in quests or buying for gold. Simply discard a card from your hand to draw a random treasure card from your sideboard. Treasure cards seem to be basic normal cards which have their stats boosted to make the card more powerful, either by increasing hit ratio or damage, or to make it cheaper to cast. But once you use the treasure card, it goes away forever. Thats tough to explain to a kid wondering why her Seraph card disappeared.

Companionship in Wizard101 is a different beast altogether. When you are playing your character by yourself and enter a battle-circle, any other wizard playing in the area can jump in to help. The only problem being is they will pull in another enemy (and multiple enemies as you progress through higher levels.) There is a group system which is typical of any other MMO out there, same with the party system; you have a party/friend window and can invite friends to group with to get bigger rewards or help beat tougher bosses. Other than the main quests and combat phases, the players themselves really like the non-combat pets. Every single character gets one for free for beating a low-level quest (cause the girl you help is allergic to Ogres…as if) but theyre also one of the focal points for buying crown-cards from retail stores. The crowns give you currency in the game to buy gear or (most commonly) pets to play along with. For example, my daughter who has a level 25 frost mage has over 15 different pets and will spend more time figuring out which one shell want to play with rather than adjusting her deck to make it more stable.

Creativity and Shopping go hand in hand, and in the case of my daughter who spends more time at character creation than anything else- is a major component to the game. When you create a character,Vibram five fingers. you go through the storyline of being summoned to the castle by the headmaster, to helping out other students and even getting your own dorm room. And of course you can decorate your room with knick-knacks you find along your journey to going as r as to buy furniture. As you get more gold, you can even buy your own castle (size depending on cash on hand and level) and decorate as well. So not only do you get to buy clothes, wands logo polo shirts, hats and other cards, but you can even buy your own furnishings to your own house. I remember EverQuest having a feature for Guild Houses, but your own house in a game is just capital A: Awesome.

Im not going to even talk about the bad things, because there simply arent many. Sure theres a few annoyances here and there with fizzled spells and lag causing you to suddenly appear in a battle…but thats true with any game.

About a decade ago, a sound engineer told me a trick to good music in the studio was known as the KISS Philosophy. I naturally thought he was referring to the Band, but he said KISS stood for Keep It Simple, Stupid. Kings Isle has done just that: by keeping it , basic and easy enough for everyone to learn, its incredibly fun. Add to the ct you have your first 10-12 levels to play for free and theres really no downside.

Bottom Line: Great fun for both kids and parents and even more fun when you play together!

Graphics: Quite good, given this is supposed to be a kids game. Animation on the monsters are excellent and spell effects are nicely fit into the whole scheme of things.

9Story: As good if not better than many of the current realm of Free MMOs. Sometimes r is better.

8Sound: The storyline is spoken and acted perfectly with most of the quest dialog being both spoken and readable in a text-box. Everything sounds fitting to the surroundings:

9Kid Friendly: Designed for kids. I would suggest using this game as an excuse to play games with your kids:

10Replayability: Very high replay value – the different schools of magic are drastic enough to make a player want to try multiple characters.

8Cost: Free for the first world or 10-12 levels. To gain access to higher levels and different worlds, you can buy crowns and unlock the entire game, or pay monthly $9.95. Theres also a mily pack which gives multiple login accounts (so you can play with your kids) at $6.95 a person.

cheapest rsTight Supply Bolsters Commodities,Many commodities remain a compelling investment,Vibram Five Fingers Shoes Sale. thanks to a tight supply-demand picture and their ability to be used as an inflation hedge, said three panellists at the 23rd Morningstar Conference in Chicago, which took place earlier this month.

Addressing the topic, "Commodities: Economic Threat or Investment Opportunity," Bob Greer, manager of PIMCO Commodity Real Return Strategy, said investing in a large basket of commodities over the long term has yielded returns that are competitive with equities; however, unlike equities,polo ralph lauren outlet. commodities function as an inflation hedge. They can also protect against short-term supply shocks that can affect the equity market, as when a war breaks out in the Middle East, producing a spike in oil prices.

Geoff Jay, an energy analyst with Janus vibram five fingers review, noted that socio-economic as well as political ctors are always part of the risk equation when investing in commodities, and income growth in emerging markets runescape money, such as China, as much as rising industrial demand are driving up gold, corn, and oil prices.

MacKenzie Davis, portfolio manager of RS Global Natural Resources, added that gold and oil producers have run out of their cheapest sources of output, so their marginal cost of production is rising. These sources require more complicated exploration, and though higher prices have made these projects viable,Juicy Couture Handbags. they might take longer to get on line. That tightens supply and drives up prices. Thus, even if emerging-markets demand were to slacken,vibram five fingers bikila. supply could remain relatively tight.

Supplies are not tight for all commodities, however,wow account. with Davis noting that nickel, aluminium, and zinc output more than meets demand, unlike oil and gold. He said if one has a long-term investment time horizon and is willing to take on company operating risks and perhaps higher volatility at times, the stocks of commodities producers are another way to go. The key here is investing in commodity producers that can maintain healthy returns on capital even when demand is soft, Davis said. He mentioned Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY) and Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (POT), which his fund owns, as examples.

The Game Archaeologist and the What Ifs: True Fantasy Live Online?free world o

As an extremely amateur historian — and anextremely attractive archaeologist — Ive always been scinated with the what ifs of gamings timeline. What ifBlizzard had pulled the plug onWorld of Warcraft during development as it did forWarcraft Adventures? What ifHellgate: London had a lot more time and resources before it launched? What if North America had embraced the free-to-play model much earlier instead of the subscription model? What if Shawn came to his senses before he hired me?

The Game Archaeologist and the What Ifs: True Fantasy Live Online?free world o,Life wouldve been a lot better. Or worse. Thats the problem with countectual history: We can make educated guesses, but well never really know. While its sad to see MMOs shut down due to underperformance, its especially maddening to contemplate MMOs canceled before they even made it to the starting gate. In a new periodic series here atThe Game Archaeologist, Im going to look at a few of the what ifs of prematurely terminated MMORPGs.

And to kick us off, Im tackling probably one of the most frustrating, painful subjects that still linger amongst potential ns. Im talking, of course, ofTrue Fantasy Live Online, the game that couldve shown the true potential of console MMOs. Or, yknow, not.

A killer app in the

Console companies and game studios are forever chasing that coveted but elusive killer app — an application or game that becomes so insanely popular that it drives sales for the platform on which it appears. ThinkSuper Mario Bros. for the NES orFinal Fantasy VII for the PlayStation, and youll understand how this becomes sales gold.

Its understandable thatMicrosoft wanted a similar hit for its fledgling Xbox Live service. While we know now that Xbox Live became an unparalleled success, it was r from a sure thing back in 2002, especially after Segas ilure with the Dreamcasts online service. Microsoft wanted to anchor the service around a must have title, and an online RPG in the vein ofEverQuest andFinal Fantasy XI seemed to be an option. Of course, a killer app is much easier dreamed up than developed.

Microsoft hired Japanese studioLevel 5, a company experienced in RPG development, to create what was to be called True Fantasy Live Online. When first announced in 2002, it activated many a gamers salivary glands. It was a lush, cel-shaded ntasy world in which players could not only go on adventures and fight for glory and loot but also socialize, fish, settle, and explore wonderful new vistas.

Eyes bigger than stomachs

True Fantasy Live Online not only looked good — and it was the darling of conventions early on — but its proposed feature list read like an MMO gamers dream come true. Level 5 wanted to include characters that evolved physically in the vein ofFable, a crafting system that allowed you to join a guild and put your own personalized signature on the items you created, and fully customizable player housing. There were even plans to have an ongoing story that would continue to shape and change the world over time.

Players were given the option to start in one of four countries, each with its own malleable history and unique conflicts. From there, they could strike out wherever they pleased, eventually hooking up with players from other countries as they reached the borders. Fantastic modes of transportation were planned, from dinosaurs to broomsticks to troll-drawn carriages.

Too good to be true? Or the work of geniuses who reached for the stars? Well never know.

Gamespot got a look at the title at the 2003 Tokyo Game Show and noted that communication was one of the most interesting challenges in the game. Because Microsoft didnt want its players encumbered by a keyboard, it insisted that Level 5 utilize Xbox Lives voice communication in the game. This is something that sounds good in theory but proved exceedingly difficult to put into practice. Consider the difficulties of providing a pronity filter (which Xbox Live today could certainly use) or how to talk long-distance. Aspects of MMO chat that we take for granted turn into a nightmarish headache when limited by voice communication only.

Downll

Ill give you a good rule of thumb for MMOs: If you dont hear about a game in development for a good long while, chances are there are reasons to be seriously worried. Some may bemoan the constant hype bombardment that studios churn out during development, but it serves to show that title is still alive and kicking.

From the latter half of 2003 and into 2004, TFLO went dark. Press releases dried up, new information and screenshots were rare, and the community became increasingly worried. Hopeful-players had good reason to, it turned out: On June 2nd, 2004, Microsoft announced that it had made the decision to cease development. True Fantasy Live Online was dead.

What had happened? The answer, as it usually goes, was not that . From most reports, Level 5s ambitious design was crashing and burning when it came to implementing voice chat and network code in the game,wow power leveling. two areas in which the studio was inexperienced. On top of that, Microsoft began to lean hard on the developer with increasing demands to hurry things the heck up. Before too long, the game was delayed from 2003 to 2004, and soon thereafter, canceled.

Level 5 presidentAkihiro Hino admitted that TFLO was essentially finished at that point: The game had been showcased to the media, the world of TFLO was already complete, and within it, it was possible to live a virtual life to a degree. We continued development with the aim of a network game that we ourselves would want to play. However,Juicy cuture laptop case. development required more time than expected, and as a result, the amount of time people would be able to play slipped considerably.

Whatever the precise reasoning behind the projects termination, the two companies parted ways less-than-amicably. In this case, at least, Japanese and American work styles proved incompatible, and Level 5 and Microsoft would never work together again.

The aftermath

Apart from the rare self-immolating n, the community moved on and life continued as normal. Although we were deprived of what looked like a scinating MMO and the opportunity to see if this couldve broken the console barrier, both Microsoft and Level 5 came out of the mess OK. Xbox Live is inching toward legitimate MMO territory with games likeUndead Labs zombie title, and Level 5 hit it huge with theProfessor Layton puzzle series (among others).

What if True Fantasy Live Online had gone, well, online? What if it proved every inch the killer app that Microsoft had hoped, spreading like wildfire across both the East and West? Its tantalizing to consider that Xbox Live mightve had its own answer toWorld of Warcraft, and disappointed ns who flocked elsewhere for their MMO fixes mightve invested their bucks intoBill Gates wallet instead.

Take a big whiff of what if, my friends, by watching this five-minute demo video of TFLO:

When not clawing his eyes out at the atrocious state of general chat channels, Justin Syp Olivetti pulls out his history textbook for a lecture or two on the good ol days of MMOs inThe Game Archaeologist. You can contact him via email atjustin@massively.com or through his gaming blog,Bio Break.

I was actively saving up money to buy an Xbox just for this.

The cancellation was a freaking dagger through my heart.Reply

@Syesta

You and me both brother. You and me both. I already had an Xbox though, but still, the cancellation crushed me.Reply

@PrimeSynergy

I totally agree. Its funny because microsoft had

MYTHICA, this one, and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and they dropped THEM ALL.

Maybe you could cover Mythica next, because i actually cried when that got cancelled. Reply

@Raikulxox

Thats exactly what I was thinking… The features and all that seem similar to what devCat are trying to do with Mabinogi… well aside the ct this was on console rather than PCReply

Consoles are what games evolved from… not what they should be evolving towards.

I know my opinion on this is an outlier and not shared by very many, nevermind the majority,Vibram Five Fingers Outlet. but the mouse+keyboard is vastly superior to any console controller Ive ever seen or used AND PCs are vastly more powerful and versatile than 5 consoles combined.

Please note: PC > console in power is a Fact not an opinion

and Keyboard+mouse more versatile than console contoller is a Fact not an opinion.

The industry focus on consoles rather than PCs is simply driven by the lowest common denominators… more money + less informed player base = satisction of greed for game developers. (and yes, if you were paying attention there I just called console gamers dummies… hey, if the dunce cap fits…)

Developing games for PC requires more resources (both time and money) and greater quality. Added to the ct that fewer folks maintain high end comps and so you have a smaller base youre selling to, and its clear why many companies take the smarter business decision to develop for the console community instead, who demand r less from their games, spend money on them more frequently, and are generally too dumb to realize they are being gypped.

Do I want to see an MMO for consoles? No… Id rather see the gaming community come to its collective senses and demand higher quality games… you know… on PCs.

Oh… and get off my lawn you damn kids!Reply

@ArcherAvatar

what you say is mostly true but you cant deny the ct that playing mario or street fighter on a mouse keyboard combo sucks, and using a controller of some type is just more suited for certain games.Reply

@ArcherAvatar

Im lost for a viable rebuttal because the arrogance and blindness of your commentary speaks for itself. What is there to point out that isnt plainly evident to anyone else?Reply

Dust 514 is a PS3 exclusive. I guess you wrote this before that was announced, or you simply missed that ct altogether. Either way, Im correcting you because I can. It also makes me feel smarter, and I need that, really.Reply

Xbox Live is inching toward legitimate MMO territory with games like Dust 514

About that…

While the 360 eventually did get a version of FFXI (which is a game by a company with a lot of weight to throw around to get their way), it seems like Microsoft is still having some serious issues courting MMOs onto their consoles.

I was and still am a huge n of Level 5. Its sad that nothing ever came of this simply because they really do create some amazing stuff.Reply

@(Unverified)

SE got lucky with FFXI, but the main reason FFXIV and most other MMO arent being considered for XBL is because M$ is requiring that to play an MMO one must have a paid gold account, instead of Silver as FFXI was able to squeeze by with. Plus they also want a cut of the monthly fee.

M$ needs to be more lenient than that, cause the avg consumer is not going to agree to such ridiculous fees. Having to pay for XBL Gold, plus the MMO sub is just too much… Reply

@(Unverified)

The only reason the Xbox 360 got Final Fantasy 11 was Microsoft was desperate and trying to claw their way into the Japanese market. Their console have not performed well at all compared to the homegrown Sony and Nintendo in Japan, despite big hitters like Blue Dragon being hyped as one of its first titles, hyped more by the team behind the game being the same people behind Chrono Trigger.Reply

Level 5 president Akihiro Hino admitted that TFLO was essentially finished at that point

Now this is what I dont get then. If a game is this r along, and Level 5 being quite successful now, why not reopen development on the title and launch it as another F2P MMO, or at least contract in one of the bazillion F2P devs in the Eastern countries to finish or just host it on their servers.

Sure something could ll into the vien of not having the rights to a particular feature or whatever that could hold up development, and this goes for many other titles where devs have said they cant just re-release said title because of previous contracts with a certain product or advertisements within the game that they no longer have.

It doesnt sound like it would be that hard to go in there and change it to something generic or remove it entirely to get around those ended contractual roadblocks.

Still looks like an amazing game and I too bought an XBox back in the day just for this game, then it got cancelled and I was like damn and then sold the XBox…lolReply

@Khalus Its sad to think of how many finished or mostly-finished games get their plug pulled, and then all those art assets and code gets essentially flushed down the tubes and lost. I dont understand why such remains arent sold to other companies who could maybe salvage concepts and systems, so that all that hard work wasnt gone to waste.Reply

Man… I wanted to play this game so bad, but ended up getting FFXI. Its too bad that these companies rush the devs all the time. Im sure many of the games that iled would have actually succeeded if it werent for the rush. Reply

Its funny you mention Xbox Live and Dust 514, is that they already announced that Dust 514 is PS3 Exclusive, and there was even an article on here about it.

And the biggest reasons why Microsofts console will never see a true MMO is because they hafree world of warcraft goldve a near-draconian lock upon their system and updates. You release an MMO on it, and Microsoft will most likely try and make you pay for every content update for the game, plus expansions.

Thats why Team Fortress 2 on the 360 is the basic version from release.

Thats why CO or AoC was never released upon it.

And thats why Dust 514 isnt on there.Reply

Micro$haft has not done well with MMOs this and that Norse gods MMO for the pc, the one that had alot of people myself included excited about (I cant remember the name atm). Reply

EVERY single mmo that has had to shut down and ALL that currently have less than 250k subscribers is because of one very , yet very doable thing…

NO PROMOTION WHATSOEVER!!!!

Current and former mmos continue to ONLY promote to current mmo gamers and pc/console games, THATS IT. WOW has 11-12 million subs because they CONTINUE to promote their game to non-gamers and gamers that dont play mmos.

Devs of todays mmos promote online on mmo and gaming websites 99% of the time, with a FEW commercials put out on TV for bigger budget games during their first 2 months of release. THATS IT.

Sad, isnt it? That ALL games that have closed up shop could be THRIVING right now if they actually had a promotion team with common sense.

Another sad aspect polo ralph lauren outlet, that many many many devs seem to forget, is that THERE ARE MILLIONS of gamers that have computers that not only dont play certain mmos or dont know all the main titles… THEY DONT EVEN KNOW THAT MMORPGS EXIST!!!!

Yup, its ct. There are easily over 200million people 18-60 with computers that dont even know what an mmo is! On top of that add another 300 million or so GAMERS that have computers but play mostly console games and cant even name more than 1-2 mmos. Or that think all mmos are like wow or eq2

There is MASSIVE potential for ALL mmos to easily have 500k+ players, and i mean PAYING customers, not cheapo people that only play f2p games.

AND, all the numbers from above are excluding the millions of people with computers in ASIA!!!

So devs,cheap polo shirts. WAKE THE FRACK UP, spend some damn money and PROMOTE!!!!

Lastly,. these devs need to predominantly promote to NON-gamers and gamers that dont play mmos. The reason being is that current mmo devs ONLY PROMOTE TO CURRENT and former mmo players!! Which is ridiculous. How can you expect an mmo to thrive when your sole market is players that would have to leave their current mmo game or split their time between games? Devs promote to the same pool of 25million gamers(give or take a few mill) and A LOT of these players are flip-flopping, spoiled, jaded, incredibly biased and bitter people that will jump on the nest shiny bandwagon, only to rush to level cap, complain about no content and then move to another game.

We need to promote to new blood – people that will actually APPRECIATE what mmorpgs and how incredibly CHEAP $15/mo is for the massive content you get over a lifetime.

WAKE UP DEVS – if you dont promote correctly now,blown film extrusion. soon all mmos will be have their whiney vocal minority become the MAJORITY like some games have now, and the games WILL DIE because of these jaded morons.

S! – XReply
